How I Designed My Colorful and Girly Dining Room

colorful and bright dining room design with rifle paper company wallpaper and vintage elements

Our dining room is my favorite spot in our entire house. Every time I look over at it, it makes me happy. The space is such a great summary of my personal style: feminine, colorful, bright, airy, and a little vintage.

I started the room with wallpaper. I know not everyone is a fan of accent walls. However, I knew the dining room wall complete with 2 original windows was the perfect spot to highlight. I am a HUGE fan of Rifle Paper Company and had been dreaming of the day I would get to use their wallpaper in my home. When they released the City Maps print, I knew it was the one!

I balanced the lightness of the walls and wallpaper with dining chairs I painted black (they’re from Pottery Barn a few years ago that my aunt gifted me) and covered the cushions in Rifle Paper Co. fabric. With a few fun accessories and vintage pieces (the table and library catalog cabinet), the dining room came to life!

Tips

  1. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns! The map wallpaper and floral fabric patterns don’t clash, because they carry different ‘visual weight.’ The wallpaper has a larger pattern with much more white space, while the floral pattern is busier, darker, and smaller.

  2. Mix old and new. No matter your personal style, mixing vintage pieces into your decor is a great way to make a room timeless. In our dining room, both main furniture pieces are thrift and vintage finds mixed in with new accessories. The dining table was a Facebook Marketplace find, and the card catalog cabinet, from the 70’s, is from Chairish.
