Kitchen Renovation Part 1

IT’S FINALLY TIME!!!!!! After 4 years of planning, saving, and daydreaming, we are finally starting our kitchen renovation THIS WEEK! I must be dreaming; I could pinch myself from disbelief.

DECOR PLAN

Like our bathroom, I want our kitchen to reflect the age and style of our home (she’s a 1907 Craftsman home) while still reflective of our personal style. I love the classic black and white look for that vintage and timeless feel, but I also love color.

All that being said, naturally, I started with black cabinets. We are doing an IKEA kitchen (much more on the process, thoughts on quality, etc. coming later!) and went with their standard black Sektion cabinet line. With a classic shaker style door, it’s exactly the look I’m going for. To continue the classic black-and-white look, we’ll be getting white quartz countertops and a gorgeous creamy zellige tile for the backsplash.

Where does the color come in? Great question. I’ve been eyeing the Schumacher Citrus Garden wallpaper for years and immediately knew it belongs in our kitchen.

I cannot wait to see the end result. I’ve wavered between design choices for our kitchen since we moved in. Once I settled on this design, however, it felt right, and I couldn’t wait to get going.

Layout-wise, not much is changing. We are adding a small peninsula for some extra counter and seating space and a pantry. I will never take having extra cabinet space for granted.

Progress

Fixing the foundation was first up. Like our bathroom, we knew there was pretty extensive water damage to be fixed. Luckily, in only a few days, all has been repaired and new flooring has been laid! I’m so excited already just to have a nice flat surface!

Will and I have spent the past week putting the IKEA cabinets together every night. Honestly, once you do the first one, it goes by pretty quickly. We did hire a professional to install them for us, because we were terrified of getting everything even in our old home with its many angles. One week in, and it already looks like a brand new space! I can’t wait to share more - now we wait for countertops.
