DIY Outdoor Vintage Christmas Garland
This year, I changed up our outdoor Christmas decor by turning our porch into one giant garland. Colorful, sparkly, and filled with lots of vintage of touches- it’s my favorite Christmas porch decor we’ve done so far! It’s very cute during the day time- lots of friendly neighbors saying our house looks like a gingerbread house. However, it really shines at night.
Want to turn your house into a vintage cutie with something similar? Follow my steps below!
What you’ll need:
Chicken Wire
Garland
Christmas Lights
Floral Wire
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Large Ornaments/ Christmas Decor
I used some large peppermints, candy canes, oversized vintage ornaments, and fake oversized lights
Christmas Wreath Picks
Unbreakable Christmas Ornaments
Unbreakable Christmas Garland (beaded, etc.)
Steps
The first thing I did was staple chicken wire to our porch going up each column and across the whole porch. I also reenforced the columns with large zip ties going through the chicken wire. I know staples may be more permanent than some people are looking for, but we aren’t worried about any damage. Our house is old, and the porch is already covered in nail holes.
Once the chicken wire was up, I used green floral wire to attached my garland all around the porch. I purchased 2 50-foot garlands from Home Depot. For extra filler, I then went through and filled in the space with extra garland I purchased from Amazon.
Lights are next! 2 strands of colorful Christmas lights were enough for me to go over the whole garland. I again used floral wire to attach the lights to the chicken wire every 12-15 inches.
Organizing and attaching the decorations and ornaments was definitely the hardest part. I moved things around multiple times and, probably, got 10,000 steps going up and down the ladder. I used hot glue and floral wire to create small loops on the back of my ornaments. Then I used more floral wire to attached the ornaments to the chicken wire using the wired loops.
Hint: To make organizing your decorations easier, try to mirror the ‘weights’ of decorations on each side. For example, on each column, I have an ornament, a piece of candy, a light, and another ornament. The shapes and weights also mirror each side of the bow going across the porch.Once all of my large ornaments were finally up, I hung 2 different garlands on each side going across the porch.
To add filler to the columns, I added a few bunches of plastic ornaments in between the large ornaments using more floral wire.
Finally, I went through and added a few wreath picks and cut-up pieces of extra garland for some filler and depth.
